What AOG Really Costs — And How Fast Freight Pays for Itself
An aircraft on the ground can cost operators tens of thousands of pounds an hour. Here is why speed of delivery is the single biggest lever you can pull.

When an aircraft is declared AOG — Aircraft on Ground — the clock starts immediately, and it is an expensive clock. Depending on the airframe and the route, a grounded commercial aircraft can cost an operator anywhere from £10,000 to £150,000 for every hour it sits unable to fly. Crew rebooking, passenger compensation, missed slots and knock-on schedule disruption all stack up long after the original fault is fixed.
Why the part is only half the problem
Sourcing the correct component is rarely the hard part. Getting it to the right hangar, at the right airport, with the right paperwork, before the next departure window closes — that is where most delays actually happen. A part sitting in a warehouse 200 miles away is worth nothing to an engineer waiting on the apron.
This is why dedicated transport matters. A shared network optimises for cost per parcel; an AOG operation optimises for a single outcome: the part in the engineer's hands as fast as physically possible. Those are very different jobs.
The maths of dedicated delivery
Consider a mid-size jet losing £30,000 an hour. If a dedicated vehicle collects a part immediately and shaves four hours off the delivery versus a next-flight-out consolidation service, that is £120,000 of avoided cost. Against that number, the premium for a dedicated van or hand-carry is almost always trivial.
The lesson is simple: in time-critical aviation, the cheapest transport is frequently the one that costs the most per mile but returns the aircraft to service soonest.
